Do you ever feel like you're constantly battling your own thoughts and emotions? Maybe you try to push away anxiety, numb difficult feelings, or overthink every decision. If so, you're not alone—and you're not broken.

There’s a therapy approach that doesn’t ask you to “fix” yourself, but instead invites you to make peace with what you’re feeling and reconnect with what truly matters. It’s called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

At Illumine Counseling, ACT is one of the approaches I use to help clients feel less stuck and more empowered. Let’s take a closer look at how it works.

What is ACT?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (pronounced like the word “act”) is an evidence-based therapy that helps you:

  • Accept the things you can’t control,

  • Learn to live in the present moment,

  • And take action toward a more meaningful, values-based life.

Instead of trying to eliminate painful emotions or "get rid" of negative thoughts, ACT helps you see them as passengers on the bus of your life, with you in the driver's seat—so they don’t control your choices or keep you from living fully.

Why Do We Get Stuck?

It’s human nature to want to avoid pain. We distract ourselves, overthink, or try to push tough feelings away. But often, the more we resist our pain, the more powerful it becomes.

ACT helps you let go of the struggle, and instead gently notice and allow those thoughts and feelings—without letting them define you.

What ACT Teaches

In therapy, we’ll focus on skills that help you:

  • Be present: Learn mindfulness techniques to anchor yourself in the here and now.

  • Accept thoughts and feelings: Notice difficult emotions and thoughts without judgment.

  • Detach from thoughts: See your thoughts as just thoughts—not facts you have to obey.

  • Clarify values: Get clear on what truly matters to you in life.

  • Take committed action: Make choices that align with your values, even when it's out of your comfort zone

An Example in Everyday Life

Let’s say you value connection and growth, but you're afraid of rejection, so you avoid social situations or expressing yourself.

Using ACT, we would work on:

  • Accepting the fear as a natural feeling—not something to get rid of

  • Noticing and detaching from unhelpful thoughts like “They won’t like me”

  • Clarifying your values, such as building meaningful relationships

  • Taking small, intentional steps toward those values—maybe reaching out to someone or showing up authentically—even if fear is still there

It’s not about eliminating fear; it’s about moving forward anyway.

Why ACT Can Be So Empowering

ACT offers a gentle yet powerful shift in how we relate to our inner world. It doesn’t promise a life without pain—but it helps you stop avoiding, start living, and build a life that reflects your truest self.

Clients who work with ACT often say they feel:

  • Less stuck in their thoughts

  • More present and connected

  • Clearer about what matters most

  • More courageous in facing life’s challenges

  • Greater self-compassion
