When we experience something traumatic—whether it’s a single or multiple events—it can leave a lasting impact on how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us. These experiences don’t just affect our memories; they shape our thoughts, emotions, and even our sense of identity.

One evidence-based therapy that helps people move forward after trauma is called Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). At Illumine Counseling, CPT is one of the tools I use to help clients understand and heal from what they’ve been through—so they can acknowledge their history and take their power back.

What is CPT?

Cognitive Processing Therapy is a structured form of talk therapy developed specifically for treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). But it’s also effective for anyone struggling with guilt, shame, anxiety, or stuck thinking related to a distressing events.

The goal of CPT is to help you:

  • Identify unhelpful thoughts that are keeping you stuck

  • Explore the impact of those thoughts on your emotions and behavior

  • Learn how to shift beliefs to create room for healing

Why Trauma Changes the Way We Think

Trauma has a way of changing our internal narrative. You might start to believe things like:

  • “It was my fault.”

  • “I can’t trust anyone anymore.”

  • “I should have done something differently.”

  • "The world is very dangerous."

  • “I’m weak because this still affects me.”

These beliefs can be incredibly painful—and they can keep us feeling stuck or ashamed. CPT gently helps untangle these thoughts, making room for more balanced perspectives.

What to Expect in CPT

CPT typically involves 12-15 sessions and includes:

  • Talking through the trauma (at your pace, and only if you’re ready)

  • Writing and reflecting on how the trauma has affected your beliefs

  • Learning tools to challenge and shift unhelpful thoughts

  • Practicing new ways of thinking that support your healing and growth

The focus is on how you’re thinking about past traumatic events now—and how those thoughts are impacting your life.

A Path Toward Healing

One of the most empowering aspects of CPT is that it reminds us we are not defined by what happened to us. Through this work, clients often experience:

  • A reduction in anxiety, guilt, or sadness

  • Better sleep and emotional regulation

  • Improved relationships and communication

  • A renewed sense of self-worth and direction

Healing is possible—and you don’t have to do it alone.
